Description
In the mid-1950s, Omer Orsi, head of Maserati, foresaw the rise of the luxury grand tourer market that would emerge alongside the postwar economic boom. He realized that Maserati needed to invest in an entirely new model in terms of concept, production volume, and engine displacement.
The Maserati 3500 GT, internally designated Tipo 101, became the first Maserati to be produced on a large scale. In 1956, Maserati’s chief engineer Giulio Alfieri began developing the engine, which was derived from the twin-cam inline-six used in the racing 350S.
